 in the case of the enterprise D because of the numerous curves I actually sculpted much of it using very dense mesh because you have to subdivide the hell out of it to get the contours you want but then it'll end up being like 150 mb then you use the decimated tool in blender to cut the poly count down by like 90 percent and it does a good job but it does leave those hairballs then from there you can add external features and do manual cleaning and editing.  On my machine decimating a 150 mb model took about 3 hrs of leaving the computer idle lol.  Overall this method produced a low poly convincing enough ship in probably half the time of modeling geometry from scratch would.
