Many fans noticed the scale difference and so in canon dialogue was written so that they could reuse the model for several different classes all drastically different in size to save money? Fir example the original bird of prey known as the B'rel class was maybe only 100 m long with a crew of a dozen or so officers but the K'Vort class made popular in Next Generation I was over 300 meters long and had about 150 officers.
